| Tax Tip from a former Tax Auditor: |
| A common requirement for taxpayers who use the Standard Mileage allowance is to be able to prove their Total Annual Mileage [TAM]. This is the Total miles for the year as opposed to the specific type of mileage - business, medical, volunteer, employee business expense, etc. You have to have both figures in order to determine the Use percentage. One of the best methods I've seen for proving this is to have your oil changed at the same time every year; preferably near the beginning or end of your tax year. Since the company providing the service wants you back in 3000 miles they are very careful to write down the correct odometer reading. Keep both receipts and simply deduct last years odometer reading from this years reading to determine your TAM. If you ever get audited for this issue, you've got undeniable proof of the TAM figure and the basis for the use percentage. NOTE: It is NOT a good idea to only change your oil and filter just one time a year; do it on a regular basis through the year. |
